A Rough Guide to the Play-By-eMail Blood Bowl Tool
By Joe Hainstock, with thanks to Michael Lamanna. Modified by Martin Lærkes, November 2008.
What Is Play-By-eMail?
PBeM means “play by email”, and the play by email tool is a program, which lets you play Blood Bowl by email: Simply put, it records all your moves and dice rolls, which allows an opponent anywhere in the world to watch your turn, play his own turn, and send it back to you. It is worth emphasizing that the tool is not a video game. Nor does it aspire to be. The tool is simply a program for playing a board game via email – and as such it works perfectly.
A normal match will last between 5 and 26 days depending on the availability of the opponent and the differing time zones of the world.
Getting started in the NTBBL
Since you’re reading this document, you already know our site, and have obviously found the downloads in the Rules Section. Be sure to read the rest of the Rules Section!
In order to join the NTBBL, go to the forum and click register at the top of the page – then fill out the application. Once you’re done, email your user name to plasmoid@hotmail.com (the current admin), and once he replies – usually in a day or 2 – you’re good to go.
I recommend that you start by only signing up 1 or 2 of your potential 5 teams. That way, if play by email BB is not to your liking, then you can reasonably easily finish your 2 games before leaving. Leaving mid-game creates quite a mess for me to clean up, so please don’t do that. The same applies if you at some point want/need to take a break from the NTBBL: Please finish your games before leaving, or at the very least let your opponents know what is happening, so that you can agree whether to finish the game, put it on hold, or forfeit. Remember, this is not a computer game. Your opponents are real people, and they deserve real respect.
You’ll need:
1. You’ll need to know how to play Games Workshop’s Blood Bowl.
2. An email account.
3. An opponent – easily found via the NTBBL website.
4. The PBeM tool.
5. An html roster, created with the tool’s Team Creator program.
6. Program that can compress files to the .zip format (as mailing game files unzipped can corrupt them)

Creating A Team Roster
You must use a special html team roster with the PBeM tool. Open the BBTeamCreator folder, and then double-click on the BBTeamCreator icon to start the application. On the first page you can change the League Setting to various house rules, but for the NTBBL just leave it as is.
At the top left of the screen you should see three tabs. Click the first one labeled Team, and fill in your Coach name, eMail address and Team Name immediately. (Doing anything else before that may cause the application to crash). Select the race you want in the drop down menu, and then spend the cash you want on rereolls, Fan Factor, apothecary, cheerleaders and assistant coaches. You can also click the Players tab, and start purchasing your players.
Finally, when you are satisfied with your team selection, click on the HTML tab at the top left of the screen. If you wish, you can change the colour and font your roster sheet will use. The Save as HTML button allows you to save the roster under a name of your choice.
Starting A Game
The first time you launch the PBeM tool, you should enter your name or username in the "Who Are You?" field on the starting screen. This will identify your actions in the tool as having been made by you. You should only have to do this once; after that the Tool will remember your name. Proceed to either Start A New Game or Load A Saved Game. To start a new game, click on that icon. You will be met by a screen called "Bloodbowl Settings", which has a large variety of options allowing you to choose which house rules or version of the rules your game will use. However, playing in the NTBBL you should just click Accept these settings.
Next up is the Pre-Game Sequence screen. In the NTBBL, the coach of the team with the highest Team Value always creates the game file:
1. Upload the home (or challenging) team's HTML roster by clicking on Load Home Team and browsing for the relevant file.
2. Answer the question "Are you playing this team?" by clicking either Yes or No.
3. Load the away (or challenged) team's HTML roster by clicking on Load Away Team and browsing for the relevant file.
4. Answer the question "Are you playing this team?" by clicking either Yes or No.
Note that the rosters used are anything but straight html, then they won’t work with the tool.
5. Click on the Save Game button at the bottom of the screen. Do NOT complete any more of the pre-game sequence.
6. Now save the game file, exit the tool, zip the file and email it to your opponent.
The underdog then opens the game file using the Load A Saved Game option, and continues the pre-game sequence, including selecting inducements. Selecting inducements is not automated, so the underdog has to select them manually, typing his selection into the log. By starting each line with a “!”, the comment will be saved to the notes box for easy reference. End the pre-game by clicking Coin Toss and then on Start Game.
The 4 Tool Windows
You will now see the main PBeM Tool screen with the pitch, players and dugout – as well as lots of buttons and a line for writing comments. But the tool actually has 3 more active windows: The window called Bloodbowl Log is a text version of what happens in the game. Note that the tool actually records more than what goes into the log – the tool records every click. The Bloodbowl Notes window is for easy reference. When you write a comment and preface it with a !, it gets stored both in the Log and in the Notes. Finally, there is the small Log Controller – and the Log Controller is a crucial part of enjoying PBeM Blood Bowl. The Controller has 6 buttons, that are used for reviewing the game file. Whenever you receive a turn from your opponent, us the controller to rewind to the start of his turn, and then watch his turn by clicking 1-forward repeatedly. That way you can watch how he moved his players, what he rolled, and any comments he made.
As for playing your own turn, the main PBeM tool screen is for that. But be careful not doing anything until you’ve reached the (current) end of the game – otherwise you’ll be overwriting the existing log, and well, that’s considered cheating.
Setting Up
Naturally, the defense sets up first. Simply drag and drop players from the dug-out on to the pitch. A player can be moved from the pitch back into the dugout by selecting Right Click > Reserve. Finally, place the ball by right clicking the target square and selecting Hide Ball for Kickoff. Also, each coach may take a free 50K card if both coaches agree. (Pick Cards > Add Card from the top menu. Remember to add a password, which will allow you to read and play your cards).
Next, the offense sets up, and then clicks on the Kickoff Table icon. The tool will then make all rolls pertaining to the kick-off, with one exception: If the kick-off result requires either coach to do something before the ball bounces, then the ball must be bounced manually (Right click the ball > Scatter ball). It isn’t always obvious what the kick-off result was, but you can check it with the Log or the Log Controller.
Finally, click on your turn counter to start your turn.
The Basics
In the main window, you’ll find everything you need for playing. At the very top, there are several drop down menus and buttons for key functions. Next you’ll see the turn track and TD, CAS and Reroll count. You can left click any of the latter 3 to add 1, and right click to subtract 1. Then follows the pitch itself and the dug-outs. Finally, at the bottom, you’ll find the manual dice-buttons and the comments bar.
In a nutshell, this is how you play: Declare actions in the text box. Click on the player, then click out the route you want him to follow – then drag and drop to move him. Any rolls or actions that you want to do can be done by right clicking and selecting the proper option. Right clicking a player, a square or the ball will produce different options – but many of the most common ones can also be done with the short cut buttons. Finally, if there is anything that you can’t figure out how to do, just write it in the log and roll manually with the dice buttons. Pretty simple really.
Block Actions
When doing a Block or Move action, you don’t need to declare it first. Only the limited actions require declaration (in the comments bar). The only exception is players with negaskills (Bonehead, Wild Animal, etc.) – you must declare all action-types with these players, and you must do so before clicking the player – because clicking the player will immediately trigger his negaskill-roll.
To throw a block, click your player and drag onto the victim of the block. As long as you just hover over the victim, the comments bar will show how many dice your block will be. If you let go, then the tool will roll that many block dice – but you can also retreat to your own player before letting go, which will cancel the block.
If your block fails to knock down its target, or would result in your own player being knocked down, the Tool will offer you the option of using a re-roll. It is worth noting that the same window appears regardless of whether you rolled double-Pushed or double-Skulls, so it worth checking the dice roll before you decide to use a re-roll. The dice roll appears in the bottom left corner of the window.
To push back a player, drag his icon to the appropriate square as you would move one of your own players. The Tool will not notice if you push back a player to an illegal square, so you must follow the rules for push backs as normal. To follow up a push back, drag and drop your own player's icon to the appropriate square. To knock down an opposing player (whether pushed back or not), just click the Armour Roll button on the toolbar – the tool should be able to figure out who knocked who over. To knock down one of your own players, use Right Click > Special Actions > AV/Inj Roll for your own players.
Note: For some reason, if a block results in both players being knocked down, the Tool will not apply the result of the opposing player's Armour and Injury Rolls. The rolls are made in the Tool, and can be seen either in the log box at the bottom of the screen, or in the Bloodbowl Log window itself. You can manually apply the results of the roll by right-clicking on a player.
Move Actions
To move a player (on any action that allows movement), you must mark the path the path he intends to take by clicking in each square. Clicking in a square a second time will deselect it, and clicking the player again will deselect all squares. The tool will number these squares in white if no rolls are required. And that case, just drag and drop the player at the end of his route. A blue number indicates that a dodge roll is required – drag the player to the square he is dodging from, then Right Click > Make Dodge roll. A square that requires a GFI is shown by a yellow number – drag the player to the square he is dodging to, then Right Click > Make Go For It roll. Finally, a square that would mean moving over a player's maximum MA allowance (plus GFIs) is shown by a black number. For example:

If a player starts his action prone, the tool will start marking squares of his movement at 4 rather than 1, as it takes three square to stand a player up. If you drag and drop a prone player to another square, the Tool will ask you to confirm that the player will stand up.
The Ball
A player can move to a square containing the ball by dragging and dropping the player's icon onto the square, just as you would with an unoccupied square. The Tool wlll then trigger a popup window, giving the options to Roll GFI First? or Make Pick Up Roll. You can click on these two buttons as and when appropriate. If the roll fails, the Tool will automatically scatter the ball from its starting square. If the roll is a success, then the player "gets the ball" and can carry on moving if he is able. The Tool shows when a player is carrying the ball by displaying their icon in a lighter shade.
Any other action involving the ball can be done by either right clicking the ball or a player, and selecting the appropriate option. In addition, you can Right Click > Ball Carrier to forego all rolls.
To push the victim of a block into the ball, make him the ball carrier, the push back and follow up as appropriate. Finally, Right Click the ball carrier and select Scatter Ball from Player or knock him down by making an Armour Roll depending on the result of the block.
Limited Actions
As mentioned, any limited action must be declared in the comments bar.
To do a Hand-Off action, move like on a Move Action, then right click on the receiver and select Make a Catch Roll.
To do a Pass Action, move like on a Move Action, then Right Click > Make a Pass Roll and follow the instructions.
To do a Blitz Action, move like on a Move Action to reach your victim, then do a block. Following up before making the Armour Roll is free.
To do a Foul Action, move like on a Move Action to reach your victim, then drag and drop onto the victim – this will trigger a Foul Roll popup window. Note that the tool does not count defensive assists properly, so check the number of assists just in case.
Ending A Drive
When a player moves into the opposition endzone and so scores a touchdown, you can record this by selecting the player and clicking Star Player Points > Touchdown from the Menu bar. This will award your team the touchdown, and the player 3 SPPs.
After scoring, it is traditional to click the turn marker for the turn you just completed. Proceed to click Prepare for Kickoff on the Toolbar (or Start Half, if your touchdown ended the half). The Tool will make all appropriate rolls (KO recovery, Regenerate, secret weapons etc.) and move players to the appropriate area of the dugout as necessary. You should setup for another drive, just as you did for the first.
At the end of the first half, or the second half if you are playing overtime, you should clear the pitch by clicking Start half instead of Prepare for Kickoff.
The Post Match Sequence
When you have finished your game, click on Post-game on the Menu bar to launch the post match sequence. The PBeMBB Tool will automate all the rolls necessary for the Post Match Sequence, but unfortunately not everything else is automated.
1. Click on the Match Winnings button below your team's name. The tool does not add +10K for playing a draw, so you’ll have to add that manually. Also be aware that the tool will offer a winnings reroll to both teams. This is a mistake, only the winner is allowed to use that option.
3. Click on the MVP button below your team's name.
4. Click on the Skill Rolls button below your team's name.
5. The Tool should list any of your players that are eligible for a Star Player Roll in a popup window. If you click on a player's name, the Tool should make the Star Player Roll for that player, and list your options. If you chose a skill, just write it in the empty bar.
6. The tool will change the player’s profile according to the skill roll, but it does not update his new cost automatically. You have to do this manually, by Right Click player > Stats Change.
7. Click on the Fan Factor button below your team's name. The NTBBL use some slightly outdated Fan Factor rules, so just accept the result!
8. Finally, click on the Purchases button below your team's name. This should bring up your team roster in a new window:
a. You can buy re-rolls, cheerleaders, assistant coaches and an apothecary, by clicking the appropriate buy button.
b. You can also buy players (including journeymen) by clicking the Add Player button: A new window will open in which you can fill out all his stats, including his cost (journeymen should be costed at 0, but still have their proper (TV) Value). Be careful when adding skills. All skills must be spelled correctly, and must be separated by a comma and a space. If the tool does not recognize your skill, it will add some question marks to it, and it will not work properly until you’ve fixed the spelling. Right Click > Stats Change can be used to remove the question marks and correct the error.
c. When you have completely finished your Post Match Sequence, select the Update Team Roster button. The Tool will ask you to "select a team roster to be updated". Select the HTML roster file you used at the start of the game. The Tool will create a new, updated version of this roster called _new.htm. The Tool will not overwrite your old roster.
d. Save the game as normal.
e. Zip the *.bbm file and email it to your opponent so that he can complete his half of the Post Match Sequence.
f. When you’re both done, go to team administration on the NTBBL site and end the match. You must both upload the same game file in order to successfully end the game.
Skills
Most skills are fully automated. If you have them, the tool will offer you reroll options, add modifiers etc. Some are not automated at all, read more about these in the Rules Section on the website. Finally, some need to be activated by you: Most of these can be activated by Right Click player > Targeted Actions.
Adding a Team to the League
After playing with the tool, either just against yourself or against an opponent in a practice match, it’s time to add a real team to the NTBBL. Click the Team Administration option from front page of the NTBBL, and upload your roster. Once uploaded, you’re ready to issue or receive your first challenge. Go to the list of teams, and click the left button under Team Name to sort all teams by availability. Then go to your Team Administration to issue or respond to a challenge. Good luck.
